Your Protek guide to a thriving green garden and lawn.
A lush, abundant
garden is every gardener's dream. When planting those first seeds or seedlings,
images of a green paradise come to mind, but there is more to it than adding
plants to your garden. Achieving that lush Utopia often depends on the right
fertilizers. Protek offers a range of tailor-made fertilisers to meet your
plants' specific needs. This article will unpack the composition, benefits and
recommended usage of each variant of their most popular fertilizer range.
Before we
look at the 4 different fertilisers, we will look at the ingredients in your typical
fertiliser and how and why they are used. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium
are the 3 primary fertiliser nutrients; each plays an important role in plant
nutrition.
Nitrogen is one of the most important
nutrients for plants because it is used to form protein and protein is used to
form the tissues of most living things. Nitrogen thus promotes the lush green
growth of your plants.
Phosphorus is essential in the role of root
development and flower production. Photosynthesis, better known as, energy
usage and storage in plants is also linked to the phosphorus content in the
soil. It is necessary to help plants grow and develop normally.
Potassium
is the third key
nutrient and helps to strengthen the plant’s resistance to diseases and aids in
overall health. It is also linked to protection in the plant when the weather
is cold or dry by maintaining its water balance and overall strength and vigour.
The four variations
of fertiliser offered by Protek have specific ratios of Nitrogen, Phosphorus
and Potassium to benefit different plants. We will have a look at the ratios in
each, as well as how and when to use these fertilisers for optimal plant
growth.
1. Protek Lawn and Foliage Fertiliser
This chemical granular fertilizer boasts a balanced ratio of
Nitrogen, Phosphorus and potassium in the ratio of N7: P1: K3. This fertiliser is
ideal for the general feeding of lawns and foliage. How do you use Protek lawn
and foliage fertiliser? It should be applied in early spring and repeated every
four weeks. You will need to apply about 20-30 grams for every square meter in
the drip area of evergreen plants, shrubs and trees and water well with each
application.
2. Protek General Fertilizer
The General Fertiliser offers
a balanced nutrient blend with an NPK ratio of N2:P3:K2. This combination is a
good mix of nutrients for various plants and is perfect for flower-bearing
shrubs, flowers and vegetables. When preparing your flower and vegetable beds,
apply 30 grams per square meter and work the fertiliser into a depth of around
10-20cm. You will need to repeat this twice during the growing season. For
flowering shrubs, apply 30-60 grams per square meter evenly around the shrub
and work it into the soil lightly, also repeating the application twice during
the growing season and water well after each application.
3. Lan/Kan
Protek’s Lan/Kan
fertilizer is made up of mostly Nitrogen and is specifically designed for
plants that require active vegetative growth such as shrubs, vegetables and
fruit trees. For your lawn, add 45 grams of Kan/Lan per square meter and repeat
the application every 4-6 weeks. For vegetables, top dress the beds with 20 grams
per square meter 4 weeks after planting. For fruit trees, apply 150 g of Protek
Kan/Lan per year of the tree age up to a maximum of 900g per tree.
Always water well after applying
any kind of fertiliser.
4. Protek Rose & Flower Fertiliser
This chemical granular
fertilizer is specially formulated for roses, seedlings, and flower-bearing
plants. It offers an NPK ratio of N 8 : P 1: K 5. With this fertiliser apply 50
grams per large plant or 20 grams per small plant in the early spring and
repeat the application every 4 weeks throughout the growing season. Water well
after each application.
